In the past, when I had a horse with kidney problems and problems with the 
heat I put a salt block in a big pan of water.  The salt saturated the water 
and the mare drank the water.  The vet said she couldn't get enough salt 
without her tongue getting sore and the salty water really seemed to help 
her.
