[RC] Question on glucose, feeding - Michelle Smith

I've been watching all the posts on glycogen, grain, beetpulp and feeding
to keep the levels up during a ride.

I know there are different opinions on whether to feed grain or beet pulp
out on trail during the ride but in regards to grain....

My first question - are glycogen and calories the same in this
conversation? Supposing that you are feeding beetpulp/grain sloshes days
before the ride, at camp, during vet checks.... if you use a product like
Ultium as their grain - does it have enough glycogen to produce the same
effect as grain? I know Ultium is 1.8 MCals per pound and grain, depending
on type, for this instance let's say has 1.3 MCals - are you better off
feeding a higher calorie product like Ultium or because Ultium has less
sugar (I think) are you better off with grain? My horses get (at rides)
wet beet pulp mixed with Ultium and a little grain for taste so
"introducing a new feed" isn't an issue.

Love the posts - especially Bruce's creative personal description on each
email.

Michelle
