Bruce:

You forget the demographics. After 60, the incident may be
lower simply for the fact that there are much fewer of us
still in a position to have painful backs. At 70 I had very
few back problems and 100 bales of hay were still doable.
Now close to 80, perhaps ten bales is the limit and then I
hurt enough to look towards better living thru better
chemistry.

  There is hope. Almost all mechanical back pain (by far
the most 
common type) can be improved or alleviated. And,
statistically speaking, 
after the age of 60 you are less likely to get back pain as
you age. 
Hard to believe, but true. Else my clinic would be overrun
with 90 year 
old patients. Those are actually quite rare. Dr Q
