RE: [RC] [RC] Beet pulp fed dry - Mel Cochran

I don't think worries should be limited to beet pulp. I think any sort of finely chopped forage or some feed pellets can present a choking hazard for a horse that bolts its feed. I thought I was doing my older mare a favor when I bought her some "premium chopped alfalfa forage" - she choked after a couple of mouthfulls. Luckily, I was able to massage the mass enough to get it on down the hatch and did not have to call the vet. Choke is a very scary thing. This mare gets all of her feed wet after that episode. I don't soak it, I just add water right before feeding.
