Re: [RC] can beet pulp cause tying-up? - Don HustonI had the same thing happen to me when I was riding my well conditioned mare, all feed was the same as always. It only happened one time in over 10 years of riding that mare. It was a very warm summer afternoon but no warmer than usual. I never figured out a reason why but I learned a valuable clue to predicting an impending problem. Right from the start she trotted right off but not as enthusiastically and I didn't push her. I happened to see her shadow and noticed her tail was not up away from her butt and ignored it. At about 3 miles into our normal 8-10 mile ride she slowed down trotting up a hill and would not speed up when I kissed for it, her head was lower than usual and her tail was clamped down. I got off and hand walked back home and she was okay. Since that time I have always checked how my horses hold their tails when trotting and noticed on 2 occasions that my gelding was clamping his tail just before he started cramping in his sides. I had done the classic stupid thing of all shots at once including strangles just a week before a 50. He cramped up that ride and the next one 4 weeks later then never again. I never give shots that way any more either.Don Huston At 06:01 PM 7/7/2006 Friday, you wrote: A friend rode her well-conditioned horse on an easy, slow ride-- mostly walking, a little trotting.
