RE: [RC] [RC] Trailer bedding (shavings)-was Standing wraps - Sharon Levasseur

You're not paranoid... I always put a fly mask on Zephyr to keep the sawdust and
hay out of his eyes.

Quoting Mel Cochran <brio_gal@xxxxxxxxxxx>:

This probably sounds silly, but I do not use shavings in my trailer because
I am afraid that particles from them could fly up in my horse's eyes with
all of the air circulating through the trailer. I also worry that they
could be slippery?

Am I being overly paranoid? Would my horses benefit from having some
shavings over the mats in my trailer? I have porous mats so liquids go
through to the floor and drain out rather than sitting on top of the mats
and making them slippery. It does make for a lot of work when I get home,
take the mats out, rinse them and the trailer floor and then put everything
back in.

While we're on the subject of trailering...

My neighbors are stressing to me that when I trailer (2 horse straight
load) I should be using
waaay more shavings than I do (which is none to almost none).

I conceed that if I was using a stock trailer as a box, and hauling
extremely long distances,
then maybe I would- but for short trips of a few hrs- I don't see the
point.

They tried to use the 'less concussion' on the legs theory- and I just
don't see how that could possibly help unless the bedding extremely deep.

What do most of you do?

Barb
