The whole speed requirement thing is promoting the wrong idea, in my opinion. If someone wants to promote flat-track 100 mile races, let them call it something else. Endurance is all about technical trails that challenge the rider's skill in using his horse to its best advantage, depending on the conditions of the trail as they go along.

I think the best thing the US could do to improve its chance of medals is
get some allies, lobby *hard* with other countries to bring back
technical courses and get rid of the speed requirements on these
qualifying rides.  That, combined with good up and coming riders could be
the ticket.
