Well, I have to agree that if you are quick enough to be able to collect him before gravity takes over that could be a good option.  I never was and so let the horse do whatever he needed to, including scooting along on his nose until he got his own weight back.  My contribution was to stay as still as possible so as not to interfere.

 I say that if I can use the reins to collect a horse that is threatening to go down and get him rocked back on his hind end a little, he is less likely to go down.  I have experienced this collection too many times to dispute its validity.
