Re: [RC] tripping horse - kirstywiscombe

Hi
I'm a uk endurance rider who had a tripping horse on loan who i thought with schooling/good shoeing would improve. he just seemed to forget where his feet were at times recently he tripped when loading into the lorry and just lay there not bothering to get up and unfortunately for me he tripped again a few weeks later when i was competing him. This time it was on a stony track going up hill he tripped sent me out of the saddle then fell on top of me crushing my ankle. he then lay there not bothering to get up for about 20 minutes, he wasn't hurt just grazed himself.  I however had multiple fractures to my left ankle and had to have it pinned and plated. I will never ride a horse that has a tendancy to trip again. As a result of this I'm no longer on the shortlist for the World Equestrian Games with my own horse, I hope to be back riding soon and intend in doing a 100 miler before the end of the season but i shall never ride this horse again.

I have an OT Standardbred who trips and stumbles around when he is being lazy.  If I wake him up a bit, he does not trip.

Of course, as others have noted, thee are other potential reasons that a horse might trip, including shoeing and even wobbler syndrome, but for this particular horse, it's  just a failure to pay attention.
