Hello Jen,
Well at first I think they walk faster just like Dr.Q said, "grabbing my behind always puts an extra spring in MY step" then as they get confident at it maybe they like being in the lead or "in charge" so to speak. I really don't know for sure but it is a fine addition to my endurance experience.
