[RC] stirrup leathers - jen

Hey all, I have a question?  Banjo and I are back at the trails since our trailer accident.  Slowly but surely.  We did a short solo ride on unfamiliar terrain last weekend, this was our 2nd solo.  He never ceases to amaze me.  Every ride is better than the last.  My goal right now is to feel more comfortable riding solo.  I love it but it still makes me nervous.  So anyways, my question is about saddle leathers.  I got a new Crest Ridge saddle for both my son and I.  What I am thinking about doing is stripping out the western fenders and putting on an english stirrup leather.  I think this will be safer for son and more comfy for me.  I believe Carol from Hill View Farms does this for her kids' saddles.  Anyways--I'm wondering if I just put the english stirrup leather over the tree and let it hang???  or is it more complicated than that.  I was a little nervous about pulling off the fenders,  in case I can't get something back on.
Will I need to wrap the leather in some sheepskin to prevent rubbing?  Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks, Jen and Banjo
