RE: [RC] Spot on Fly stuff response and oil diet - Mary KraussIn answer to Raven re: what's the alternative for treating fleas: I use the oral tablets prescribed by the vet that de-worm and de-flea my cats and dogs. It's a monthly program. Both critters live inside and outside--I try to shake/wash their bedding outside quite often to get rid of flea eggs that might be hanging around. The vet says long-term studies show practically zero reactions to oral treatments, while the drip on stuff can be pretty dangerous--even the prescribed version by the way. My cat staggered around for half a day after we tried the prescribed version. (Of course, we'd already almost murdered her by using the grocery store Hertz version a few months earlier--her system might have been primed to react to anything.) In terms of dosing sensitivity, I've heard that cats die most often when the owner treats them with drip on stuff formulated for dogs--the person thinks that halving the dose will work but doesn't realize that the medicines differ--cats are really sensitive to the part that treats heartworms for instance, so that ingredient is not included in the feline compound. To make this horse related: I sincerely wish the spot-on treatment didn't worry me because my mare has terrible fly allergies. I just ordered those fly parasites that I've had great success with in the past; in the meantime, I'm sticking to slathering her belly with Swat once or twice a week, and I spritz her every other second with that Marigold mild fly spray. It's not terribly strong but I don't worry about how often I should spray since it's pretty much just flower juice. It smells great and even Leo the Leaper doesn't seem to mind it. So far, between discovering that her allergies are hugely reduced by adding a cup of oil to her feed and by spraying her consistently, we've not had such a bad time this year. In addition to helping her skin, that oil diet has given her a mane like never before. I had no idea she could grow such long, thick hair--it's beautiful.... I think I'll go brush it now.
