Lightning is pretty complex physics and even parts are still not 
completely understood. In a few weeks you might find indications that 
the tree was hit, i.e. leaves dying.  I suspect the lightning hit the 
tree root system and came up in through the legs of the horses. The foal 
was just too little to fend off the current.
