Andrea, My understanding is that the "shuffle" gait is a type of rack and was originally derived from interbreeding with the spanish horses of "fine gait" (now Paso Fino, Peruvian Paso, Marchador). If you want to see a schematic of how the Paso Fino moves, there's one at To see video, click on Spectrum 2005 at the following site for a slow motion video
Caveat: that's the show fino class and not the gait that you would do on the trail (well, maybe at the start of a ride :-p), but it is the basic rack, just turbo-charged :-) Ignore the weird equitation, and notice how still the rider is. A really great book on gaits and gaited horses is "Easy Gaited Horses" by the late Lee Ziegler. She covers all gaits and breeds along with a lot of great info on equitation (no, you shouldn't be slumped over dash-board style), bits (should be mild, toss the "bits for gaited horses"), and basic good horsemanship. Gaited horses are a blast to ride :-) Dana, 4 Paso Finos and 1 Arab, who's trying to learn to gait :-) ddbpaso@xxxxxxxxx ************************************
