Re: [RC] Question for the vets...or anyone?? - Diane Trefethen

Hi Liz,

There once was a crazy woman named Nancy Markle who decided that Aspartame was a huge threat to the well-being of all humanity. She claimed it caused: multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus, "fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting pains, numbness in your legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint pain, depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory", birth defects, increased levels of dopamine in the brain, diabetics to go into a coma, "many have died", Alzheimer's Disease, grand mal seizures, brain tumors, cancer, methanol toxicity, and loss of: vision, hearing, ability to walk, memory.

With nothing better to do, dozens jumped on the bandwagon and added Bells Palsy, Gulf War Syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes mellitus, epileptic seizures, migraines, confusion, severe drowsiness and sleepiness, severe hyperactivity and restless legs, atypical facial pain, severe tremors, severe depression, irritability, aggression, anxiety, personality changes, insomnia, phobias, nausea, diarrhea, sometimes with blood in stools, hives, menstrual changes, marked thinning or loss of hair, marked weight loss, gradual weight gain [MIGHT AS WELL COVER ALL BASES], hypoglycemia, severe PMS, irreversible brain damage, mental retardation, peptic ulcers, hyperactivity in children, severe depression, aggressive behavior, suicidal tendencies...

and oh yes... death.

Pretty impressive for a product that doesn't have ANY peer reviewed studies proving that Aspartame causes any of the above, much less ALL the above. With so much hype it is small wonder that some people actually believed some of this stuff.

So next time you hear someone say something negative about Aspartame, get out your salt shaker. But be careful. Salt has been linked to hypertension, osteoporosis, stomach cancer and stroke.

I've always used Metamucil as an alternative to Sand Clear with no problems, but I was recently informed by a non-horse person who worked for a small animal clinic that Metamucil and the similar generic products use Aspartame, which builds up in the body as alcohol over periods of time and has detrimental effects. Is this true?
