Re: [RC] Question for the vets...or anyone?? - Laney Humphrey

I'm not a vet so I can only add what I've heard. A friend's vet told her to use generic metamucil as an alternative to psyllium. She has been for at least 6 months with no observable ill effects. But please don't take this to mean that the vet has researched such minutae as whether what's she's using uses aspartame and whether aspartame has any bad effects on horses.

I've always used Metamucil as an alternative to Sand Clear with no problems, but I was recently informed by a non-horse person who worked for a small animal clinic that Metamucil and the similar generic products use Aspartame, which builds up in the body as alcohol over periods of time and has detrimental effects. Is this true?
