[RC] breast collars and safety - Nikki McCormack

"My next task (other than Alpines diet and exercise program) is to teach Alpine
not to spook at wind blowing leaves in the trees. Any ideas on that one????"

I love your posts. Alpine sounds so much like Cody. :) My husband and I did a fundraiser 25-mile charity ride last weekend (with breast collars). At one of the checkpoints, they had plywood cows painted like dairy cattle about the size of a calf. The first one was inset into the bushes so the horses could not see it until they were right next to it. My husband was in front and Tango did one of his miraculous one-legged pirouettes. However, my husband is used to it and righted him and eventually we got both horses past it. Nearer to the actual checkpoint, they had tin foil stars hanging from the trees that were blowing in the breeze. That was also exciting. We took a wrong turn after the checkpoint and can say with authority (since we ended up going back through the same checkpoint) that they moved the one cow.

Someone commented that I should post tips on bailing off a panicked horse. The best tip is stay on. Failing that, if you have time to choose between hitting the tree and hitting the mud, go for the mud.

Nikki (and Cody who thinks blowing tinfoil stars are even worse then blowing leaves)
