[RC] sad story (not) and natural toughness - Dot Wiggins

The all purpose ranch horse goes all day many days at a time. Long days, multiple jobs, only routine good care, like the energiser bunny, they just keep going and going. Many work for years, into upper teens and beyond. They come from durable stock.

Short story about the hot shot cowboy and endurance.
He had bragged about "beating the socks off those little Arabs" with his QH. Showed up at the ride with a lovely mare, fit and hard. Took off with front runners. I was coming along mid pack or so, about 15 miles into the ride. He was sitting on the hillside letting the mare graze, when I asked he said everything was fine, and the horse looked fine. Did not see him at the vet check or the mid ride check. RM spent quite some time looking for him later in the day, he was "lost"
Turned out he realized early in the ride his good horse was not going to keep up with out hurting her so he quit, rode out to a phone booth at the park entrance, called a buddy to come get him, rather than show up in camp and have to eat his words. Guess it was several days before he came to get his trailer and truck, took a lot of kidding by his friends and buddies, but his horse was just fine.

All the "newbies" are not fools.
