[RC] Helping Lame Horses--Legend and Adequan - Barb Peck

Although I prefer the lighter muscled longer distance-abled horses-
several years ago I ended up with a 1300 lb QH.

This guy had alot of strikes against him from the get-go.

But I'll make a very long story short about him and our use of using Legend (IV
hyalauronic acid (HA))
and Adequan ( IM PSGAGS) because he was such a perfect test case.

My vet and I experimented with him first using one or the other
- then both together first to alleviate symptoms - then to prevent (or keep
stable)
then as maintenance when he was retired.

This is a horse where I could see (and feel riding) a more fluid movement 24
hrs after an injection of either

WHen the injectios were not continued - I could feel and see a slight downward
trend (this included length and fluidity of stride- and presence (or not) of
throro pin in the hock, with the improvements pretty much being over in about 6
months..

Don (my Vet) and I decided on using both Legend and Adequan together and the
results were very very good, and they lasted alot longer (thru the whole
season).
These injections aren't cheap ($80.00 each) though.

Whether these substances are truly legal for competition is for others to
decide ( I know an east coast rider, who's horses get injections of Legend
monthly) -
but I don't have a problem with either of these substances because they do not
"mask" an exisiting problem- we're taking supplying the right materials for a
body to heal/repair.

- and incidentally - HA is now FDA approved for humans and I've talked to a few
people who avoided pretty serious knee operations by being injected & they said
the results were amazing.

Are these two substances banned in Endurance?
