[RC] Milkshakes - Sisu West Ranch

I sincerely hope that no endurance rider ever tries this concotion.

The BiCarbonate of Soda (NaHCO3) is in the product with the intention of increasing the pH (that is making the blood more basic) by means of negative HCO3 ions. This higher pH allows more buildup of lactic acid before fatigue slows the horse.

Now Lactic acid is a biporduct of anerobic matabolism (that is work without enough oxygen to completely burn the sugar to water and CO2). The ability of a body, human or equine, to do this is important for maximum sprinting activity. It will last only a few minutes before the equine has to rest. Endurance horses need to go for hours, so we have no problems with lactic acid build up. Adjusting the pH of the blood up is not good, because of other effects on the equine during a ride.

For a more complete discussion, talk to vets or Susan G.
