The Internet has always been that way...

Sigh...

I would point out that the length of one's experience
on the Internet (which, from googling "k s swigart",
for Kat seems to date from 1996) and "always" are
two different timelines.

Note: "The Internet" came into being as production network
circa 1983 and existed as an experimental network from
around 1977. Its predecessor ARPANET existed
going back in some form to around 1970. "The Internet"
      didn't go "public" until 1994.

There aren't a lot of people on Ridecamp who are going
to understand the significance of the point I am making.
Happily, John Teeter is *definitely* one of the people
who *is* going to understand. He'll be back from Egypt
soon enough.

Whether one ought to have expected it or not, the fact
is that prior to this time Ridecamp was *not* indexed
and cached by Google. Yup, you could get to it and
everything was "public," but you had to understand first
that it *existed*, what it was, and how to find it.

It's like saying "What's your problem? Timbuktu was always
publically-accesible!" after a Star Trek transporter has
been invented.

I would still like to know from Steph and John whether this
change was intentional.

..who is having flashbacks to 1994, sitting in her
company's lunchroom, trying to explain to her company's
attorney why what Cantor and Siegel had done to USENET
the night before wasn't "just like junk mail" and that
it wasn't that she was naive and unworldly, it was that
he was fundamentally clueless.

The trick is recognizing when a *qualitative* change has
occurred...
