[RC] Advice on minimizing travel and acclimatization stress in a new state - Karen Koch

Hi all! Due to a new job, I will be moving my Morgan gelding from Minnesota to Fayetteville, Arkansas in late June/early July of this year. He is 14 and in very good health, but had one 2 day impaction colic two years ago (which I think was related to a feeding error at the boarding barn right before we left it.)

Not having done any long distance trailoring or moves with him before, I was concerned about stress and how to minimize it, for a couple of reasons. We are moving from a relatively cool area of the country where he was born and has lived his entire life, to a hot humid area in the middle of summer. He is black - so more heat stress. And the predominant hay in the area is bermuda (which I am not a huge fan of); we have a variety of hays up here in MN that are less wiry and easier to digest.

I'm assuming electrolytes in feed would be a good idea -- starting before and continuing during the transition. (I typically start him on some once it gets hot here anyway, and use the Buckeye brand.) And I typically use a light colored fly sheet on him to reflect heat. Would probiotics, herbs for better digestion, or other remedies be a good idea to start before leaving and to continue during the travel and transition? What have all of you had success with?

Many thanks in advance for advice!
