pit bulls are different, so i dont recommend some of the stuff that has been suggested. if a pit bull that has been trained to fight and be agressive comes after your horse, you will have to beat the SOB to death to stop it.
i like the whip idea. at least you have something to fight back with. and it is easier to carry on your saddle than a baseball bat, which would be my next choice.

After that incident I looked around for a well made whip. After all with the nickname "crackers" you'd think you could find one in FL. I didn't find one I liked, but if I find a good on it's going on my saddle. I always carry a fold-up locking blade 4 inch hunting knife with a quick opening blade. It good for lots of things - like cutting vines we can run into. If I happen over another pit bull encounter I hate say it but I'm on the ground with the knife open and if he doesn't back off I will have no mercy. I will not have another such encounter.
