Re: [RC] Question for all of you riders... - merryben

Many years ago, was it not an Appaloosa that won the first Big Creek 70?  I am pretty sure he beat Becky and Khazen too but not positive...Virl Norton owned him at one time.  He was a big goof.  He once fell off the trail in Quicksilver and had to be rescued.  Another time, he fell into a swimming pool in Los Altos and somehow got stuck under the cover and had to be rescued.....Can't remember his name though........mb

Phooey to anyone who says only Arabs can do endurance.  Maybe it's only Arabs that can place first in many rides, but remember...not everyone wants to place first.  Just take your horse, condition, go out and do a ride, and enjoy it!!  Furthermore, there have been a couple of Quarter Horses that have taken National Championships in the early years of AERC.  Yes, Arabs are tremendous athletes, but not everyone wants to ride an Arab.  Just ride your horse and enjoy him or her.  You may not finish first, but I'll bet you'll have a wonderful time with your chosen mount.

Hi Elly

I am also new to this, and have encounted the same in regard to attitudes towards anything not Arabian. I went to a clinic last spring to learn more about endurance riding. I was told flat out to not even bother trying it with my 17hh Andalusian/QH cross. - they then started telling me what to look for in a good endurance Arab.
Well, after thinking it over, I decided that I am going to try it anyway. I will be doing my first LD this June. I hope people there will be friendly, and not judgmental of my big horse !

Here's the thing. I've encountered nothing but negative nancies when I
tell people what I want to do with her. Other horse people that do not
do endurance feel similarly to me, but the endurance community has
mostly rolled their eyes and it makes me feel real dumb. I'm not doing
endurance to win, I'm doing it because after years in the show ring, I'm
sick of it and want something that me, my horse and my husband can all
do together. And as a long distance runner, this sport really seems
like the perfect marriage between running and riding.
