Re: [RC] For those who feed......Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.Anotherquestion :-) - Chrystal

Can I add my feed question?? My mare is working probably at med intensity at the moment- we will increase until she is in good shape and then taper off- using  our endurance rides to keep in shape with easy work in between- so how do I feed at that stage?? Cut down on food on the weeks in between rides and increase the feed  maybe 2 days before a 50 and after???? HELP!!!!!!

Barbara - why do you want to switch from Ultium?? I am curious as I just finished an email "conversation" with a person at Purina asking what they would reccomend for my endurance mare and that is what the told me would probably work the best!! I am about to switch to it next week thus my curiousity- also Ultium has flax seed in it- did you find it beneficial to add the extra to your feed as well?? Thanks for any information regarding your experience with the feed.:-)

Chrystal

I'm feeding Ultium right now and would rather feed oats, but worry about getting all the nutrients that are in the Ultium.  Would I have to feed a Vitamin/Mineral supplement to make up for the lack of added nutrients in just the oats?  Right now I add the Ultium(2#'s) to beet pulp and a 1/2 cup of ground flax seeds twice a day. He also gets about 4#'s of alfalfa and free choice grass hay.  For added fat, I give him 1-2#'s of Athlete by Purina when he is working hard.  Thanks, Barbara
