[RC] Shoot the Clones - NOT - k s swigart

How many of the Anti-clone Bunch, upon being given a clone
of Rio, Secretariat, Your-Favorite-Horse-You-Had-To-Put-Down,
would shake their head and say, "No thanks, anyway, I don't believe
in cloning...it's just not ethical."

While I wouldn't say "No thanks, anyway, I don't believe in
cloning...it's just not ethical." Would say instead, "No thanks, only
and idiot would belive that a clone, just because it is a genetic
duplicate, would be foolish enough to think that it is the same horse."

Even genetic duplicates are individuals in their own rights (ask any
identical twin). It is a serious mistake to think that a clone is the
same individual as the original. People who try to get their loved one
back by cloning are doomed to failure, and to try to do so is a
disservice both to the individual that was the original and the
individual that is the "copy."

Although, I guess it is an ethical situation as well (though I don't
consider it a dilema as I cannot imagine any moral person being willing
to deny an individual the rights to its own individuality just because
it is a genetic duplicate of some other individual). Certainly, nobody
has ever taken this ethical position with respect to identical twins.

That's what a clone is, and identical twin that wasn't born at quite the
same time. They aren't interchangeable.

I don't want a genetic duplicate of some horse that I loved. It would
just remind me of the one that I lost, and I wouldn't want to "love" it
in the same way as the original because to do so would almost be a
betrayal of the original.

My relationship with my current stallion is quite different from my
relationship with his sire. And though there are things that remind me
of his sire and I am glad to have that piece of him, I like my
relationship better now that I think of him more as Philip and not so
much as Saber's son. I cannot imagine how awful it would be if he were
MORE like his sire.
