Our reasoning is that there is some evidence that trailering causes dehydration and thus loss of 'lytes. We dose to replace this etc. so they hopefully start the ride the next day with full tanks and drinking. Our personal belief is that horses sometimes drink more total if they get a bit of extra Sodium to get them thirsty and thus started.

PS. The amounts we give are not enough to get them seriously into 'lyte imbalance, just enough to stimulate thirst. Barkeepers have known this for centuries. It is the reason that the salty snacks on the bar are free. It helps sell beer.
