[RC] Novice horses and speed and distance - Kristene SmutsA question has been asked about speed for the first few 50s and I'm interested in that as well. What other opinions I'd be interested in as well would be the following : When conditioning the novice horse, one normally doesn't spend the same amount of hours and miles on his back as during competition (well, most of us with limited time). So, how reasonable is it to expect a novice horse to carry you over that distance for that amount of time if you're going at a snail's pace? Would it not be better to go at around 14kph (8-9 mph) than 11 kph (7 mph)? Also, what do you think of starting a novice horse in shorter distances (your LD definition and ours are slightly different, so therefore I'm not calling it that) for his first year. Again, this comes from the angle of creating "race brain" in the novice horse when doing those shorter distances and also he doesn't learn that you stop and go again, always expecting that when that saddle comes off, he's done for the day. Rather to start his first year with slow (see above) 60 km (37-40 miles). We have a number of very experienced riders who I respect greatly and who give excellent advice but would like to get a different perspective on these issues.
