[RC] Water stops - k s swigart

Barbara said:

HOWEVER, Lud's horse was always a poor drinker and
had not drunk any water until that 35 mile vet check. It is
not terribly unusual for a multi-day ride to have only one
vet check. All the multi-day rides I've ever done had only
one vet check. And...I've done a few where the only vet
check WAS at 35 miles because there was no way to
access the trail anywhere else.
As for Lud's horse, he did not drink that day at the one water
stop before the vet check, ...

If I remember correctly, this happened on the third day at Death Valley.
I think it worthwhile to mention that there were FOUR water stops before
the vet check, not just one (although, admittedly, the first one was
only about 3 miles out of camp so few horses were likely to avail
themselves of it). The first was halfway down Indian Ranch Road (~3-4
miles), the second was at Indian Ranch itself (~7-8 miles although you
did actually have to take a short detour up into the ranch), the third
was at the Rose Mine crossing (I'm guessing about 18/20 miles and there
was usually hay there as well), and the fourth was where the trail
crossed Panamint Valley Road (~26-28 miles and Alex usually has some hay
there as well).

Depending on which year you did it, there might actually be some natural
water in some of the wash crossings before you get to Rose Mine.

I mention this because I don't want anybody who hasn't done the ride to
think that there was only one waterstop in 35 miles of trail...or that
such rides are a common practice at multi-days. Only one vet check is a
common practice, but only one waterstop before a vet check at 35 miles
is not.
