You know, Frank, an interesting thing about this issue is that runners have the
same arguments.  Some authorities swear by using electrolyte drinks, others say
you're better off without them, still others say everyone's an individual who
has to find what works for them.  A quick Google search shows that "sports
drinks" are recommended more for their carbs than for their electrolytes.
Homebrew recipes for sports drinks call for only a "pinch" of salt.
