Re: [RC] Knee Injury - Jody Rogers-Buttram

Oh Bruce.   I like you...and I like Angie.  I have one really sorry knee and one that is going downhill.   I DID have an injury that started most of the problem.  BUT, before that, having done around 6000 endurance miles back about 9 years ago, I did have bad knees...both of them.  They were simplying wearing out.  I strongly feel that it was because I rode so much as a young kid....my joints weren't developed.  (We wouldn't do that to our young horses either...would we?)  So, injury to knee....put off the surgery for about 7 months.  Continued life as normal....ran 4 miles every day, rode my horses, and was shoeing for the public at that time.  Had the surgery.  Ignored the doctor when he said, "you can't do all that without having a problem, and if you hurts you don't have any business doing it".  Long story short....  I built up all the supporting structures to that "now surgery weakened knee".  It was not a fast process....took about 5 years to get to where it didn't hurt like the dickens.  Was the surgery worth it???  In the long run, yes.  Did I stop having the knee pain???  Mostly.  Certainly better than without it.  Does it bother me now??  Some, but for my age and miles (now going on 12,000)  I should have some  aches. (Wild Turkey..remember)  But, what I am saying here is, I have done the knee thing, and it did turn out good for me.  My knees are not going to be what stops me.  As far as would we put ourselves in a situation that we don't ask of our horses.....I feel that a real endurance rider, the ones that will go out in the dark at midnight to ride another 18 miles, in the rain on the second day of a 3 or 5 day ride, in the bitter cold.....they will ride regardless.  THAT is what makes an endurance rider.  They treat their horses much better than themselves...because a selfish person will NOT be a successful endurance rider.

Nuff said.

In short, most of us wouldn't dream of asking our horses to go down
the trail with a possible or known joint tissue compromise, and without
prompt, thorough diagnosis and treament. Why would we treat ourselves
any differently? Bruce Weary
