Re: [RC] Saddle Fit - Sharon Levasseur

I don't have a hard time believing that a 14.2h Arab/PF needs an extra wide
tree. My 14.2h Arab/RMH does! Deceiving to stand and look at him without a
saddle... but I've had a pro saddle fitter out and she's the one who said to go
extra-wide.

No comment from me on the 4-fingers thing though. I think there's a lot of
variation in finger-width so I've never really relied on that measurement.

Quoting Julienne <jsrha@xxxxxxxxx>:

I'm having a tough time finding a saddle that will fit my mare (and me).

Yesterday I tried a County Competitor with a Spring Tree, wide, 17.5, short
flaps that fit me like a dream.. but I'm not sure how it fits Isabella.

When I placed the saddle on her, she had good contact along the front panels
and the panels that went along her back (her previous saddle bridged quite a
bit). However, there were 4 fingers width between her withers and the front
part of the gullet. I've heard 2-3 fingers is a better fit. I rode her for
about an hour (haha, longest I've ridden her since our last ride with all
this
mud) and she seems to go pretty well in it, but she's a pretty stoic horse so
it was hard to tell. A friend of mine took a look with me riding in it and
she
felt along the bottom of the front panels and said there was pretty good
contact (although it was snug) and it didn't seem to be pinching her..

The saddle has a nice wide gullet and the balance of the saddle
(pommel/cantle)
seems to be pretty good, although I'll take another look the next time I'm
out
there.

Any expert saddle fitters have input on how this fits? Is 4 fingers width
okay
as far as gullet clearance in the front if it has good contact everywhere
else?
It's hard for me to believe that my mare (a little 14.2 arab/paso fino)
needs
an extra wide tree.

I also have my eye on a Schleese, 17.5, short flap which I've been told by
Schleese's saddle fitters can be widened to an extra wide if necessary.

Julienne
& Isabella (just wish this horse could talk and let me know how the saddle
feels!)
