Re: [RC] [RC] Study on electrolyte/ulcers - Truman Prevatt

All things in moderation - including moderation. A lot of how one
electrolytes depends on how fast you are riding (a 7:30 target for a 100
is a much different beast than a 7:30 target for a 50), where your are riding the varmint. The individual horse probably has
more to do with it than any hard and fast rule - know your horse and
know what makes sense for your horse.

Electrolytes are lost in copious amounts by horses in endurance rides. Electrolytes are essential and are not stored in the system. Do the math.

Well, I for one definitely appreciate hearing this viewpoint. I am
relatively new to the sport and have been uncomfortable using e-lytes with
my gelding. I don't feel like I know enough about them to use them
properly, but allowed myself to basically be bullied into it by
"conventional wisdom". With your comments and the recent news about ulcers
I am doubly convinced that right now, for me and my horse, they're not a
good idea.

Add me to those who believes that many riders over-electrolyte their horses. When it comes to any form of supplement, but especially electrolytes, I believe in moderation.

For my own body, during a ride I only drink small amounts of "sports drinks." I
drink some fruit juice but mainly plain ordinary water.
