Re: [RC] what do you take to a ride? - Diane Trefethen

When I did my first ride, the only things I had two of were reins, halters, leadropes and string girths. I didn't bring the reins or the girths because I figured if I needed them, I'd be out on the trail somewhere and they'd be back at camp.

Water scoop or sponge on thong
Splint boots if your horse EVER interferes

Grain
Corn oil (for fast calories after the ride)
Water from home (5g should suffice)

Blanket or
Fleece liner for under sheet (I prefer)
Rain sheet if you have one
Ice boots
Manure rake
Broom

Make two specific lists of your clothes; one what you wear during the ride and one for what you wear the rest of the time. Bring duplicates of anything you tend to "live" in - sweats, turtlenecks, whatever.

Also be specific about the food you bring. I divide it up into Fri nite, Saturday breakfast, lunch, snacks and special drinks I want, ie, Gatorade, coffee (brewed in thermos), milk, wine, beer, soda. Don't forget the little things like sugar, butter, s&p, any vitamins or meds you take and Aspirin or Aleve or similar.

Also specific on camping gear. Not specific = forget to bring.
Fork, spoon, sharp knife, TOILET PAPER, paper towels, etc.

Personals, ie, comb & brush, tooth brush & paste, mirror, etc

P-pot. I have NEVER not needed one. Old coffee can is fine.
