Re: [RC] Hoof Size - Lynne Glazer

Tracey,
Oh, my goodness. Not *athletic*?! Them's fighting words! ;-) Like any breeds, there are variants. I've found the Lusos to be particularly athletic, as are the Lipizzans. As a photographer who partly specializes in Baroque breeds and action shooting, I must protest a bit.

Have you ever seen Lusitano and/or Andalusian bullfighting stallions? (non-lethal, Portuguese style, with velcro tipped "lances", velcro over the withers and leather caps on the bull's horns.) Have you seen Lusitano Working Equitation? One handed, includes barrels, pole bending, jumping, going through an L and backing out, etc.

<http://www.photo.lynnesite.com/gallery/794986> Some working equitation shots partway through the gallery on page 5.
<http://www.photo.lynnesite.com/gallery/807754> bullfighting, there's an Arabian stallion in there kicking some major bull butt too! One other is a QH, rest are Andis/Lusos.

I talked to one of the breeders of the bullfighting stallions, and she particularly loves to blend Arab and Luso together for max athleticism.

The Lusitanos are incredible sporthorses, as demonstrated in North America by the touring Cavalia show. Maybe things are different in South Africa!

Agree that a Friesian/Morgan wouldn't be my first choice either, but she wants to go long distance and not at speed, which is doable from a cooling standpont. Give me big ole feet, no matter what the breed.

Can any of you tell me if a big foot/shoe size translates to a rougher
ride? I am not into endurance, thus speed is not important to me, but do
very long distance rides. I'm a tall woman and prefer some height from
my mount. I am considering the purchase of a 16.2H Frisian/Morgan X. I'm
not thrilled about the xtra height (normally like to ride something
about 15 1/2H)and am concerned about the size of foot and weight 1400
lbs.
Do those of you who do non-compitive, distance riding/camping have an
opinion on this? I just figure nimble little goat feet hug the trail, so
would a big foot feel like T-Rex?

I don't do endurance either, but do have some experience with riding
Friesians.

IMO, they are cart horses and best put into harness. They are NOT
comfortable, and they do struggle in the heat.

Some of our local "trail ride" places use them for rides because they're
hardy and fairly "ploddy", being cold bloods.

My personal aversion might just be because Baroque horses do very little
for me. I don't think they're pretty, find that knee action downright
uncomfortable, and they're not remotely athletic.
