African Horse Sickness (AHS) is transmitted by a midge which flies during the early morning and evening hours. We've had to deal with this dreadful disease forever as nothing has been able to eradicate it. It is now starting to emerge that the Zebras are immune but are also carriers, so with people wanting to establish game farms all over the place with Zebras being the first game to be installed, the chances of getting a hold on this is slim. We vaccinate once or twice a year, depending on the person's personal preference, but definitely once per year around spring time. There are also 2 or 3 homeopathic solutions to use which are proving to be very successful in prevention as well as treatment. It's a dreadful disease as it can kill a horse within 24 hours - I've lost a broodmare to one of the "versions" (thick head), and as Tracey mentioned, there are two. The "thick head" where the entire head swells up, the soft tissue in the eyes become bloodshot and the vessels will eventually burst, and the horse's throat swells up so he can't eat or drink and also the lungs have liquid around it. The "thin head" version is just the opposite - the head "shrinks" and the horse can't eat or drink. There are approximately 15 strains of the disease and every year a new strain pitches up, so the vaccines are always one year behind. Our entire horse community goes into stress mode at this time of the year. Cindy has had a few horses at her yard go down with it.
