Re: [RC] Yellowstone Info needed - Jeannie Gillen

There is a horsecamp at Tuolumne (sp?) Meadows...it is at the backside of
the people camp with direct access to trail......The riding is
fantastic.....it is rocky....and there is usually a lot of water.....you can
even swim your horse in the lakes...or climb up to Vogelsang at 11,000
....or just stay on the lower trails to enjoy the incredible vistas around
every bend. There are also a LOT of mosquitoes during certain times.....I
think late summer is the worst.

I hope you go....because Yosemite is getting a reputation for not being
horse friendly...which results in people not going, which results in the NPS
saying they don't need to have horsecamps!

There is also a horsecamp at Wawona, not as rocky, lots of trees and gentler
terrain....but I think not as dramatically pretty as Tuolumne.

From the National Park Service web site:

Private stock can be brought into the park. Overnight stock use
is not permitted prior to July 1, due to range readiness and/or
wet trail conditions. Horses are not allowed in frontcountry
campgrounds, but are permitted in certain backcountry campsites.
For information on planning a backcountry trip with stock, call
the Backcountry Office at (307) 344-2160.
