Re: [RC] How did you get started? - Laney Humphrey

Started riding when I was 6, got my first horse when I was 9. Had some lessons, first were from a German huntseat instructor, then after a move to Tennessee from New York, from a saddleseat person. Mostly I just rode my horse, doing kid stuff like ride down the main street sitting backwards in the saddle, or riding to the local drug store for a coke and "parking" my horse in a car slot in front until the owner asked us to please move the horse around to the back so cars could park where they were supposed to. Sold my horse, went to college, did the big city thing, travelled, met a guy with a horse off the race track. We got married, had kids, finally had room and time to get horses again. Still just "rode" but actually did one endurance ride in eastern Oklahoma back in the early 1980s. Moved again so had to sell horses. Got divorced, came to California made friends with a woman who said her husband rode & would I like to go with him sometime. I eagerly said "yes!" Turned out he needed someone to condition his backup endurance horse. I had no idea what "endurance" was but I didn't care. I didn't know horses could trot that fast for that long! I was a cripple every Monday morning for at least a year as I slowly got things figured out. After my first ride (early 1990s) I swore I'd never do another. But a year later, I did. I rode his 2nd horse for 4 years before getting my first. Shared an entry to xp2001 with a friend and discovered that I love multi-day rides. I'm not competitive but love the challenge of taking care of my horse so that he and I can have fun doing as many days, one after the other, as possible. Nowadays I cross train with reining, some reined cowhorse and dressage. Oh, and I wrote a book about saddles for endurance.

Hi,

I was just curious about how you guys got into the sport of endurance. Did you start as a child, or migrate over to endurance after spending some years riding in another discipline? Did you switch breeds? How many endurance horses do most of you have?

I have not gotten "into" the sport as of yet. I am in the "watch and learn" stage. I have never had formal riding training, but I have been riding horses since I was 12 and enjoy trailriding and parades. The comraderie that you guys have is really what interests me.
