Re: [RC] AERC rides mapped from the online calendar - Barbara McCrary

To all of you who had a hand in bringing this new service to AERC, my hat's off to you. It's very cool.....
And to ride managers who have not yet submitted their coordinates, it's easier than I realized. Just download Google Earth and find your ride camp site, then submit the coordinates to Bob Morris.

Subject: [RC] AERC rides mapped from the online calendar

The AERC Technical Committee has provided a new feature that allows the display of the location of some rides on a map using the online calendar.

The new feature is accessed from the custom ride calendar at

http://www.doublejoy.com/erol/Calendar/ridesCUSTOM.asp

This interface allows selection by time period, state, distance, and region for the AERC calendar.

Locations are shown for those rides where latitude/longitude coordinates have been supplied by ride managers or riders. If you have or can obtain coordinates for rides that are not available now, please email them to Bob Morris at bobmorris@xxxxxxxxx

This feature uses the Google API and is the due to a lot of effort on the part of Russ Humphrey and Bob Morris of the committee.

Planned additional features include showing rides nearest to your home location.

Several things to note. This is a work in progress and we would appreciate your feedback. It's been tested for Internet Explorer, Mozilla, and Firefox browsers.

The application can't handle displaying more than 100 ride locations at a time on a map. Don't try to display the whole country and expect to see all the rides. We are still working on this.

Sometimes a portion of the map will fail to display. If that happens - try refreshing your browser. This may be caused by heavy traffic to the Google map server.

The submit button is off the bottom of a normal display so once you've made your selection - scroll down and click "normal".

Be sure to read the directions to the right of the map display once it comes up. You can zoom in/out and drag the map to different areas.

There is more help in date format and other use of the interface as you scroll down the entry page.

Mike
