It is my understanding that Dressage started as a method of training noble cavalrymen and horses.  Now in a battle a horse will be asked to go over rough ground, at any speed, and do it all while the rider has a lance or saber in the right hand and later a pistol in the left hand.
 
I have a hard time envisioning a modern show dressage horse being guided by the riders legs over a rough field, but this had to be the goal of the training of a good war horse.
