My english reins have a buckle in the middle, and more than one time (in 
fact, almost every pair I own), a horse that stepped on a rein broke off the 
little end piece where the hole is that the metal tongue of the buckle goes 
through.  It's easy to fix, just poke another hole, and a great safety measure, 
I 
guess.  I also use the scissor snaps, and figure that they would come loose in 
an 
emergency situation.  Jeez the things I never thought of!!  jeri
