Re: [RC] [RC] Bits - for those of you who love your horse, read. - Laurie Durgin

I have had the same experience with Ratboy. He works off a touch and legs at home, and in the ring, but on the trail he can pull and argue. But harsher bits make him buck. Tried a pelham in the beginning,("get a bit with more control argument")--I didn't like bucking--changed back to snaffle-- but still got some arguing, headtossing, etc. Tried a "waterford' with pretty good success--but it was big and lumpy..Tried a S-hack. Ok in ring, but notice we lost our lateral moves and thuough he was leg trained--semi neckreining. When on the trail when he 'tested me' The hack made him buck and head toss. Realised he hates poll and chin pressure. "Tried an english hack too. I also just plain ol' prefer 2 reins--I know how to get out of trouble with 2 hands.
Then I got a Myler ported fullcheck hinged snaffle, he really relaxed in it and yet when on the trail, he wouldn't argue or fight it. I did try to go back to a reular snaffle,(it was a little harder for him to eat in the ported myler) and he acted like I was killing him.
So I just bought another (after trying cheaper ripoffs)--I think I prefer the hinge to the regular nutcracker connection. My mare who hasn't had a lot of work in a bridle really reacts to any kind of discomfort--she prefers the hinged snaffle too.

The snaffle is always the bit that is used at my farm, but just recently we tried the Myler Comfort Snaffle and it has made a believer of all of us. The horses seem to just plain like it and prefer it! They sort of accept it like, "wow, where did this come from"! I would certainly recommend the Myler line. They even have a rental program. And no one paid me for this commercial!!
