Average_speed X ride_time = distance. If you ride steady at 6 mph it doesn't matter how many vet checks you have your ride time will for 50 miles will be 8:20 if you have one check two checks or three checks. Like Angile if I only had one check, I'd take more time since I would stop to eat on the trail. I would probably argue about it too, if I hadn't experienced how it really works for me and my horses. They all get into a routine. It takes time to go into the check, as I usually will dismount and walk into the vetcheck -- that alone can add an extra ten to fifteen minutes to each and every check depending upon how far I walk. Then I have to go to the in-timer, the horse usually wants to drink before I get a pulse, then go get a pulse. If there is a group I may have to wait (most of the time I have to wait, because most of the rides in my region are quite large). Sometimes you have to pull tack before you can pulse down because they want you to vet thru as soon as you get your pulse -- if I go to my trailer first to pull tack (I don't have crew), even if it is close that will waste even more time. Once you accurately figure out how much time is wasted going thru a check three times a day instead of once, then it's pretty easy to see how even if you let the horse eat on the trail it doesn't make up for that lost time, which is not included in the 'holds'. I let my horses eat the same on a trail regardless of whether or not I have one or three vet checks, if there is food and they want it they eat. They usually don't have to stop and waste time there either, they learn to grab and go. Go do some 5 day rides, then some one day rides and report back how it works for your horses, ok?
