I don't want to hear anymore whining--- I just paid $2.35 for REGULAR gas in Santa Barbara yesterday!!!! And in CA we are supposedly closer to the source!
Consider yourself lucky if your prices are anything short of CA's!

California likes its air quality -- the gasoline (and presumably diesel) allowed to be sold in the state is highly specified (http://www.hartenergynetwork.com/motorfuels/state/doc/ca/reg/carfg96.htm), and county air quality boards can add their own specifications. Not all refineries produce gasoline suitable for sale here (http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/~hal/people/hal/NYTimes/2004-07-01.html).
