Re: [RC] Plastic Shoe Info - Linda Courts

I also have to agree with Rob Kalb's assessment of plastic shoes.

I used the Coxton/Poly ones very sucessfully on a very small horse (13.3 800
lbs). This horse had to be shod every 3/4 weeks no matter what kind of shoe
we used so they were changed often enough to avoid the most obvious problem
of wall separation.

On the average to larger sized horse with normal shoeing times of 6 weeks
there were problems. The main one was not enough support to the hoof. Then
the spreading, nail rising problems.

I tried Equi-Steel, I think this is correct name, a few years ago on Orion
(15.1 1000 lbs) and had them changed on saturday night after one day of a
CTR in rocky northern Arkansas. All day saturday he was short striding,
moving like he was walking on egg-shells. I had regular steel shoes put
back on for Sunday and within two miles he was moving normally again. This
was my third ride with these shoes, but the other two, where they worked OK,
were not rocky at all.

When the synthetics first became semi-popular in the '80's, I experimented
with everyone I could find. I was married to a farrier so this was easy to
do. At that time, I liked the Coxton/Poly best, but they only worked on my
one small horse. Some I tried were so slick riding with them at speed was
dangerous, some wore out so quickly it wasn't possible to finish even one
rocky 50 miler. Most all had some kind of problem. Other than that one
small horse, I've not been able to use them successfully in normal
conditions.
