RE: [RC] Maybe shorter is better ;) - Teri HunterI have a 14.3 horse who does the fast long extension. When you ride it, you have to semi stand in your stirrups while your bottom is turning from side to side. I have had horses behind me that we were riding together and they were loping and she was trotting. She absolutely loves to go that stride. Now for the kicker, she use to have a short choppy stride. I took dressage lessons on a lesson horse and read a book on dressage from an old timeer in some other country. I forgot who Klemmer or Klemskie. He said if you wanted to teach your horse to lengthen their stride at a trot you need to post higher and longer. If you do short fast posting your horse will do short choppy trotting. So, I tried it, over a period of a year I guess my short choppy trot turned into a beautiful extension. I have been riding her this way for about 9 years now. Never a problem with her trot, now I am having a problem with the lope. I am trying to make her slow and easy, not, she just switches into her trot but today she actually was able to pick it up by having her head and putting a leg on her at the same time, almost like a half hault in really fast motion. I love what dressage can do for an endurance horse. My 14'2" horse has a plenty long stride which I love since it has no suspension. My 15' horse's stride probably is "longer" but it's much harder for me to ride because there is suspension. The length of the stride is determined by the horse's conformation: upright shoulder = short, choppy stride; 45 degree shoulder = longer stride. There's a bit more than that but that's the basic.
