Re: [RC] Weight Divisions - Diane Trefethen

You do not "declare" your Weight Division at the beginning of a ride year. You only "declare" your Weight Division on your ride entry form.

There isn't anything in the rules about not being able to change one's weight division after a certain date. There IS a rule about switching any points earned during the year to a different REGION:

8.7 If a member moves to a different AERC Region prior to June 1, all
points and mileage will be recorded in the Region to which that member
moves; in a move on or after June 1, all points and mileage remain
in the original Region.

In fact, the rules make it very clear that if during the ride year a person LOSES enough weight so (s)he no longer makes the MINIMUM for the division that (s)he has been riding in, then (s)he MUST ride in the next lower Weight Division:

8.5.2.5 For a rider to stay within a weight division he/she
must meet the minimum requirement but need not
stay under the maximum parameter.

Rule 8.5.3 then goes on to detail the rights of another rider to challenge any rider's claim that (s)he is heavy enough to qualify for a specific division and to request a weighing of any rider.

Thus, when you send in your entry, it is your responsibility to make sure that the Weight Division you specify on that entry is one which, if you were to be weighed, you would be at LEAST as heavy as the minimum required for that division.

As Mike pointed out, if you lose enough weight during a ride year that you have to drop down a Weight Division, you cannot take your "heavier" points with you. You will earn points in two different weight divisions for that year. So, if you think you will lose enough weight during a ride year to drop down a division, just "declare" yourself in that lower division on ALL your ride entry forms. It is NOT a violation to be heavier than the maximum for a division but it IS a violation to be lighter than the minimum. The penalty for getting caught riding in a division for which you KNOW you are not heavy enough is a loss of all points AND miles for the ENTIRE YEAR.

8.5.4 Ride results list all completing riders in order of finish along
with their division.
8.5.4.1 The AERC will disqualify any members found to have
deliberately given AERC fraudulent information regarding
weight, age or any matter affecting national
or regional awards. No points or miles awarded for
entire year.

I hope this helps clear up some of the confusion on the rules governing Weight Divisions.
