Good grief, Charlie Brown!  Am I ever glad that I live in the
terrorist-ridden Middle East. The only gun I have in the house is a
broken Super Soaker, and I wouldn't dream of owning anything more
dangerous.  I have no need whatsoever for such force.  I ride all
over the place and have never needed any form of "protection".  It's
kind of scary to hear all the people who need to carry a weapon.

I feel the same way.  Not that I'm timid around guns...I've shot rifles all my life (deer hunting...shot my latest deer a couple of days ago), and am pretty handy with a pistol too.  But I've never felt the need to carry, while riding or any other time.  I run into people in the woods periodically when riding (more so during deer season), and have only once felt a bit uncomfortable...I just stayed on my horse a safe distance from him, and figured with a good kick and a yell, my horse could mow him down if he became a problem. <VBG>  We have our share of meth labs and pot patches in the Nat. Forest here, as well as the occasional dead body, and I live near Huntsville, TX, with all the state prison units (and the occasional escapee).  I just don't really worry about it...I figure the best course of action is to be alert to my surroundings and don't get into a position where my only recourse would be a gun.  And, any time one is carrying a gun, there is the very real danger of losing control of it and having the person use it against you.
