[RC] Red Ribbons that aren't for Chritmas... - cynthia hamberg

"AZ. Cindy,"
You have been a wonderful shoulder to lean on through the loss
of my little Arab, Slick-A-Roo--Thank you! --I just wanted to pass
on some advice that I have heard regarding "red ribbons" on
the tails of "known kickers." One of my friends is very good friends
with an AERC rider who has over 20,000 miles...This very
experienced rider, to paraphrase her, has said that: "If your horse has an
inclination to
kick do NOT mark it with a red ribbon." Reason being: If your
red-ribboned animal does kick, you are truly opening yourself up
for a lawsuit that you would lose "hands down." That is, you are
admitting "prior knowledge" to the horse's behavioral tendencies.
And, unfortunately, the horse in the rear that bumps into the one
in front doesn't fall under the California motor vehicle code laws
(i.e., for those of you outside of CA.: A vehicle in the rear during
a collision is found 100% at fault even if the one in front slammed
on their brakes). My advice based upon my friend's words is (she's
an AERC rider and a prosecuting attorney too): Take that
ribbon off forever. If your horse does kick another horse, they should
find themselves 'at fault' for tailgating, unless your horse truly became
"unruly" (which is against AERC guidelines and grounds for elimination from
a ride by the ride manager), and backed into the other rider's horse.
Just play it safe, and don't 'invite' the opportunists out there to 'take
away your farm' in court. --Tie the red ribbons on your Christmas
tree in memory of all of the great horses that we've talked about...
Take Care & Happy Holidays,
"CA. Cindy," Ride Mgr. (PS) Turkey Trot
