[RC] Skip Kemmerer made me tailgate! - Ridecamp Guest

==========================================

Sorry if I've misspelled your name, Skip :-) As well at the
Big South Fork for me this year, I took the bit out of
Lippy's mouth one loop too soon, and was arguing, threatening,
talking ugly at about mile 35, when Skip calmly
suggests I put Lippy's nose on Ice Joy's tail. Somehow, I
think he's kidding, or wants his mare to give my horse what
he deserves, but he says, "No, really, she likes to have
someone back there." So we tuck behind him, and I have the
the happiest horse in the world. Lippy knew within 5 strides
that the mare was comfortable with him right on her rump. We
went like that until he settled down (those big climbs helped)
and then we could ride next to or in front. Except Lippy
really enjoyed having Ice Joy do all the heavy lifting--
going past those buggars, keeping a steady pace. If you've
ridden behind Skip, you've probably seen his look-Ma-no-reins
technique, to keep shoulders relaxed. Since there was no one
back there to see me, I did the same, and my shoulders were
glad of it.
I realize this wasn't the most shining example of my masterful
horsemanship, but it was a wonderful break. Thanks, Skip!
